Healthy School Canteen

Students at Stuarts Point Public School develop culinary skills with their involvement in the Kids in the Kitchen format at the school. Students are helping to prepare and cook meals and snacks that are shared with other students.

The canteen has made a move away from highly processed or frozen foods and is serving more nutritious home-made meals and snacks instead. Produce from the school's vegetable garden is used in the salads and sauces so that students can take part in the whole food process from growing, to cooking and then to eating. Some foods new to the menu have been trialled with free samples so that students can try before they buy.

After lunches are eaten all food scraps are collected for the school compost heap or for chook food, and plates and cutlery are washed and wiped up by students as well. This reduces packaging and waste and is a much greener and cheaper way to operate the tuckshop.
