Healthy School Canteen

Stuarts Point Public School have integrated the revised Healthy School Canteen Strategy into their local setting with approaches that meet the needs of their school community. About a decade ago the canteen made a move away from highly processed or frozen foods to serving more nutritious home-made meals and snacks for students.

Produce from the school's vegetable garden is used in menu planning so that students can take part in the whole food process from growing, to cooking and then to eating. Some foods new to the menu are trialled with free samples so that students can try before they buy.

After lunches are eaten all food scraps are collected for the school compost heap or for chook food, and plates and cutlery are washed and wiped up by students as well. This reduces packaging and waste and is a much greener and cheaper way to operate the tuckshop.
