Welcome to the K/1 class page for 2024.
During Weeks 7 and 8 of Term 4, K/1 have been exploring the text "Silly Billy". It's a story about the resourcefulness of children and using the power of the imagination to combat fears. Luckily the main character, Billy, has a supportive family and his Grandma introduces him to worry dolls. As a class, we made our own worry dolls!
Welcome to the final few weeks of Term 4. It has been exciting to see the K/1 students supporting our Kinder Orientation students, showing them how to be Strong and Smart at school. We have been enjoying using the outdoor learning space. It provides the perfect environment for authentic learning opportunities which allow the students to practise and consolidate Mathematical concepts introduced during direct instruction and guided learning in the classroom.
Welcome to Term 4!
As a class we have been on an amazing journey of learning and growth throughout the year. This term we have the opportunity to continue to build on our foundational knowledge base in English and Maths. We are also learning about 'My Place' in Geography and 'What's it made of?' in Science. We have continued to build our capacity to make healthy and safe choices in different situations, involving medicines.
The final weeks of Term 3 have passed very quickly. We have been dedicating class time in English to becoming writers who have urgency and show stamina while experimenting with compound sentences. Another important focus has been building our understanding of grammar and showing that we can identify nouns, adjectives and verbs in sentences. We all enjoyed using Kahoot to measure our learning progress. During Mathematics we have been exploring fractions and the concepts of halving of a whole and a group. It was exciting to show our thinking and explain it to a friend by cooking and halving pikelets!
K/1 have enjoyed being mathematicians who are learning to measure. During T3W7 the students have used informal units to measure the attribute of length for familiar objects in our classroom. We also took the opportunity to use a measuring tape and a metre ruler to identify things that that are longer or shorter than ourselves. It was fun to work with our families during Literacy and Numeracy Week Open Classrooms to try and make the longest piece of Minty wrapper paper!
Giinagay! In K/1 we started Term 3 by recognising and celebrating NAIDOC week. One of hands-on experiences we enjoyed was using natural materials to build a shelter, referred to as a gunyah by the First Nations People. We also dived into the word-rich world of the 'Gruffalo' and 'Room on the Broom'. We had fun using the adjectives in the text to create a Gruffalo portrait. We have been exercising a Growth Mindset while learning how to master the skills of skipping and co-operative games.
The K/1 students have become Strong and Smart students. As we reach the end of Term 2, we have a lot of new milestones to celebrate. We had students participate in their first Athletics Carnival, be great spectators for a PSSA football (soccer) game, and learn together in Peer Support lessons with the 4/5/6 leaders.
Welcome back to Term 2! It is amazing to see how much progress all the students have made since Day 1. We were excited to share our holiday experiences and do a Talk, Draw, Write and Share about these.
This term in English and Mathematics we are continuing to engage with the NSW Multiage units of work. In History, we are building our understanding of how the past is different from the future. In PDHPE we are learning and practising athletics skills. Ask your child what they need to do to be a sprinter! They love it!
K/1 have started Term 1 learning about the FISH! Philosophy. This helps the children understand how to be Strong and Smart students in a classroom environment that is positive, supportive and productive.
We have focused on each of the four FISH! principles and what they look like, sound like and feel like at school.
We have enjoyed learning through the use of concrete materials, small group activities and structured play opportunities.
We were all very excited to have Tamryn complete her work experience placement in the K/1 class. We enjoyed the Triantiwontigongalope poem by CJ Dennis and learning about rhyme. It was also fun to explore numbers and learn about finding smaller numbers in larger numbers. We even made our own 100s and 1000s biscuits and tried to count how many sprinkles!
