Every second Friday our school community comes together with the students and staff to celebrate school activities. It is a time where students are recognised for showing a FISH! philosophy, working hard learning and showing commitment to sporting endeavours. Each class has the opportunity to share an item - showcasing their work from the classroom or performing a song or dance.

Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Evie, Savannah, Ashlyn, Tamryn, Kara, Emily, Chanelle and Alanah are heading to Sydney this week to perform as part of this year’s School Spectacular extravaganza. Our students have been selected to play as part of the State Small School Marimba Ensemble. Many of our marimba playing students have been performing at local markets and events in the hope of raising funds to help with the cost of the trip. They have also received very generous donations from the local CWA association and SPADCO. Thank you to everyone for their support and we wish all our musicians, supported by Miss Worling, the best of luck!

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Book yourself in for Reading Hour

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

A special visit for Book Week

This year Book Week began with a special visit from newly published author, Kay Morrison, and illustrator, Liz Kent. These two creative locals shared their experience of working together to create the picture book, The Prickly Princess and the Pixies. It was an invaluable opportunity for our students to learn first hand about the process of planning, writing and making a book come alive. Remember that the theme for Book Week this year is 'Reading is my secret power'.

Both of these involve travel and accommodation to Sydney and the cost will be subsidised thanks to the kind and generous donations made on Sunday.

A big thanks also to all the parents who helped with making the day possible!

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

It is now quite a gap before these Kinders start big school, so please be sure to go through their portfolio on a regular basis with them and talk positively about starting school. Thank you for sharing your super stars with us and we look forward to seeing them at Stuarts Point Public School in 2018!

NAIDOC activities commenced last term with the SRC ATSI Colour Day. It was a huge success, raising $67.20 which will go towards building our Yarning Circle. During Week 1, staff spent time with local elders learning about country, hearing stories and visiting significant sites in the valley. Then on Tuesday our students participated in activities run by Uncle Mark Flanders and Mr McQueen. During ‘check-out' students commented how good it was to learn about local culture.

A big congratulations to all our students who came together on Thursday 18th May for the annual Athletics Carnival. Once again this was held on our school grounds, with competitive discus run separately during our Friday sport sessions. The students were all full of energy, especially due to the P and C volunteers who ran the tuckshop, and spent the day running, jumping and "putting". A big thank you to Ritchie Donovan who came along as our official starter. We had a special guest visit from the Big School children who came along and had a race too! Our Athletics Carnival is only a successful day due to the family and community members who come along to cheer, sometimes run and offer a hand! The Small Schools Carnival will be held at Scotts Head on Friday 2nd June.

Families are the first educators of their children and they continue to influence their children's learning and development during school years and long afterwards. This is why it is important for families and schools to work together in partnership. One of our key steps in this journey, the Big School Program, has commenced for 2017. A big thanks to Stuarts Point Preschool for their involvement and Julie Botfield, who will be running our program. Preschool students, who are eligible to start Kindergarten next year, are invited to come along and learn at ‘Big School'.

The Baylin Hoskins Foundation aims to provide education, construct resilience and create a healthy and balanced mind. It promotes diversity and acceptance through the celebration of a persons individuality. On Friday 21st October students and staff came dressed in blue and made a long gold coin fundraising line. The blue was in recogition of Baylin's favourite colour. We all hope that the $115 raised will help the Baylin Hoskins Foundation work towards its goal : "The goal isn't to live forever. The goal is to create something that will."

National Sorry Day offered the opportunity to acknowledge and reflect on the impact of the policies of forcible removal on Australia's indigenous populations. As a school we involved students in a whole school art project ‘From little hands big things grow' a play on the song ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow' that was re-released to commemorate the Formal Apology to Indigenous peoples in 2008.

Once again, Stuarts Point Public School has been very fortunate to receive generous donations from the local community toward our annual Intensive Learn to Swim scheme. The donations of well over $1000 each have been received from Alison and Ian Tolson, South West Rocks Lions Club and Stuarts Point Community Church to support this valuable program and reduce the cost for families.

Our students have thoroughly enjoyed the program which aims to develop their survival skills, swimming techniques and hopefully equip them all with life-long skills for safe participation in and around water. Also, a huge thank you to the large number of family members have been attending as volunteer helpers to increase the participation of all students. The school is amazed at the continued generosity of these local groups and of the wonderful volunteers who help out time and time again.

On Saturday 22nd Feb, Mrs Kay Morrison and Mr Grant Watson participated in training at Lewisham Public Schools Arts Unit, to become adjudicators for debating and public speaking. Many of the skills that they have learnt will assist current public speaking and debating programs at Stuarts Point and allow them to judge both primary and secondary public speaking and debating competitions. We look forward to the opportunities that this knowledge will provide to our students and thank both staff for their dedication to quality learning at our school.

Boost for Music Education at SPPS

Michelle Northfield, the K/1 teacher at Stuarts Point Public School, has returned from summer holidays all trained-up and inspired to teach more music to her class and the whole school.

Michelle attended the Sydney Symphony Orchestra's new teacher training course TunED Up in January. It was an intensive five day music training program designed to equip primary school teachers with the skills and techniques to confidently teach music to their students.

Only twenty primary teachers were chosen from across the state to take part in the inaugural course which took place at Sydney University. The teachers, including Michelle, were selected because of their passion for education and ability to share their new skills with other teachers within their schools.

TunED Up is part of the award-winning education program by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. During the workshop the 20 teachers from NSW public schools worked with musicians and staff to develop their musical experience, pedagogy and classroom practice, instrumental knowledge and competence with digital music resource - leaving them equipped to confidently teach music in classrooms.

Stuarts Point Public School is lucky to have its own music room equipped with marimbas and a wide selection of other musical instruments.

Michelle has already begun choir practice at lunch-times with a good roll-up of students, using conventional instruments and chopsticks to accompany the singing. Her class are gaining the benefits as well, as they have already performed a newly learnt song and dance "John Kanakanaka" on the first assembly of the year in front of the rest of the school and parents. Michelle commented that embedding music in our everyday routines is highly important and the rest of the staff are all excited with the prospect of enhanced musical expertise and practise in the school.

Morocco is the CWA country of study this year and local schools have been exploring the food, geography and economy of this far away land. Students presented an array of dance, music and information in spectacular costumes at our local international day held at the Stuarts Point hall. K/1 students sang four versions of a song called 'Rum Sum Sum', while the 2/3 students performed a traditional Moroccan dance which they created themselves to the song 'Dabke I'. The leaders were then presented with a generous cheque from the CWA to buy a book for their library.

Students at SPPS had a visit from Waterwise Educator, Lisa Siegel as she spoke to classes about taking care of our beautiful waterways and minimising their impact on the planet. Students explored the damage to the ecosystem that can be caused by seemingly innocent pieces of rubbish which find their way into the river system. Lots of everyday items were dropped into a fish tank to see if they would float or sink to demonstrate where they can end up in our waterways and affect the marine life that live there.

School Swimming Scheme

SPPS students have completed their school swimming scheme despite the horrible rainy weather. The younger students took part in swim and survive activities, while the older and more advanced children have improved their strokes and practiced rescue techniques. To pass their test some groups had to practise a sequence of survival skills dressed in full-length clothing to mimic an accident of falling into deep water fully clothed. A large number of volunteer parents came along to the pool each day and helped staff and swim instructors to teach the children and reduce the teacher to student ratio, enhancing the quality of instruction.

This program would not be possible without the generous help of some wonderful community members and groups who have donated toward reducing the cost of the scheme. Ian and Alison Tolson, South West Rocks Lions Club and the Stuarts Point branch of the Christian Life Centre all gave wonderful donations. Our whole school thanks this fantastic group of people for supporting such an important program for our students.

Visitors to Stuarts Point Public School will be pleasantly surprised by a beautiful mosaic artwork that now adorns the front entrance to the school. Students in Yr5/6 had a 'whale of a time' creating the artwork.

The design was created by local artist, Julie Nicholson who works in a variety of capacities with the students. Julie has taught mosaics for the past 2 years and led the senior class of 2012 in this fantastic project. With the help of some wonderful volunteer parents the whole wall has been painted blue to highlight the mosaic and it has made such a bright difference to our entrance.

They will play as part of the State Small School Marimba Ensemble which has over 50 performers from small schools all over the state. The girls have been in the school's marimba and wacky instrument band since they were in Yr2 or Yr3 and have had to perfect a repertoire of 16 songs on these giant wooden xylophones. Not only will they take part in the performances at School Spec but they will busk in the centre mall at Bondi Junction in the leadup.

Twenty nine lucky students had their annual school camp ealier this month and it was a gigantic adventure for them all. They spent four days with no screens, computers or phones and they all had the time of their lives. A few skinned knees and being drenched with cold, muddy water did nothing to take the huge smiles from their happy faces.

The Great Aussie Bush Camp near Tea Gardens was the scene of this wonderful experience and the lucky students were Year 4, 5 and 6 from Stuarts Point and Medlow Public Schools. They took part in a great variety of challenging and physically demanding activities that resembled one of the Survivor series adventures on television. The main difference being that they were fed a delicious menu of nutritious foods every day to satisfy their giant appetites.

The list of activities included archery, fencing, canoeing, indoor rock climbing, orienteering, flying fox and a giant swing. the most favoured experience was the Lost Island Adventure Challenge with muddy creeks, dark tunnels, a slippery pole crossing and other huge obstacles to traverse. The students had to work in teams to complete the challenges while teachers threw buckets of muddy water over them. One night they all gathered around a campfire to take part in challenge activities and toast marshmallows. Every students had an awesome time and came home with hours of excited tales to tell their families.

Wow, what a great long weekend at Stuarts Point! Our school and town really showed off for the Yarrahapinni Festival.

We had a hugely successful Small Schools Science Spectacular which included rockets, snakes and crocodiles, huge insects and moon and planet gazing. The students grew crystals with salt or sugar for a competition and also explored the science of sound with marimbas.

The excitement on student faces showed us just what an unreal time they were having. Each workshop was buzzing with excitement. Many thanks to all involved in making the day so successful and to the staff and parents at SPPS for the tremendous effort they went to in planning such an event! It goes to show the wonderful opportunities public education is providing for students on the Mid North Coast.

Science Spectacular

	Crystal Growing Competition

Students at four small public schools have been getting into science by growing their own salt crystals. As part of the opening day of the Yarrahapinni Festival, Medlow, Eungai and Scotts Head students all met at Stuarts Point Public School to take part in a wide range of scientific workshops. One of the highlights was the crystal growing exhibition and competition, with entries invited from all students attending.

Salt crystals grown from solution are one of the easiest and cheapest experiments to perform and some great results can be achieved. Students experimented with different colours, growing crystals on rocks, and on string suspended in a jar.

The Science and Technology Spectacular, organised by teacher Michelle Northfield, started the Yarrahapinni Festival at Stuarts Point Public School with loads of activities and exhibits for students and visitors to enjoy. Astronomy, rocket-making, reptiles and sound exploration were some of the other activities included.

Stuarts Point students experienced an informative dental health session by visiting dentists. Ellie and Guy dressed in gowns and goggles role played a visit to the dentist and the importance of brushing your teeth twice daily. There was excellent discussion generated about the importance of eating healthy foods. Keep up the good work everyone, looking after your precious teeth and gums.

Stuarts Point Public School put a sparkle into Education Week by having a 'Mintie Day' focusing on Literacy and Numeracy activitites.

Staff , students and parents were encouraged to come to school dressed as a Mintie or wearing white, red or green. Some came covered in Mintie wrappers, wore Mintie hats or carried large minties as necklaces. Students were allowed to eat Minties as they worked on literacy or numeracy problems, some involving the measurement of a Mintie wrapper, others using the information on the package.

Parents also took part in a numeracy workshop to discover how their children learn maths today. This session was run by Regional Partnerships Officer, Vicki Ford who gave the parents lots of ideas on how to explore maths at home with their children.

The students at Stuarts Point Public School are growing their own fruit and vegetables but at the moment have no-where to cook them. They have an abundance of tomatoes, beans and herbs and an expanding fruit orchard due to a gift of trees from last year's Yr6 students.

Plans are underway to begin a cooking area on the school grounds but funds are not quite enough to outfit the whole project to the desired standards.

The school community are seeking donations or discounts from any local businesses or clubs to help complete their Kids' Cooking project.

It may sound like pre-school stuff but the dynamics of each group working together to create an award-winning sand sculpture is what peer support is all about. <?null null null null null null null null null null xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /??????????>

Each group is made up with students ranging from Kindergarten to Year 6 and meet each Friday to work together on a variety of lessons or projects. The program encourages the familiarity of the younger students with the older ones and educates young people to better resist negative peer pressure, to care for each other and follow a positive lifestyle. It increases integration, confidence and support in the playground for younger students.

Leaders have been trained to run sessions with junior students to help develop trust, support and communication skills within each group.
